7-day Road trip to Norway

Rolling through Fjords: A Joyful 7-day Road trip from Sweden to Norway

Welcome to my first travel blogpost.

Imagine the excitement of hitting the open road with your closest friends and family, ready to explore new horizons and create unforgettable memories. That’s exactly what we experienced when our two families—four adults and four energetic kids—set out on a 7-day road trip adventure. With an 8-seater car packed to the brim with luggage, snacks, and boundless enthusiasm, we embarked on a journey that took us through breathtaking landscapes, charming Norwagian fjords, and endless scenic vistas.

Join us as we recount our incredible journey, sharing the highs and lows, choosing the right rental car, the planned stops and unexpected detours, and the joy of discovering the beauty and adventure that awaited us at every turn. Buckle up and get ready to relive our 7-day road trip, filled with laughter, adventure, and a whole lot of fun!

We hired an 8-seater Ford Couneo custom from Circle-K, one of the best budget-friendly options.

We packed groceries and vegetables required for 7 days, as we planned to cook all meals for our full journey period. which worked out well for us.

Someone reaching Oslo by any other means and hiring a rental car in Oslo city is time effective. We drove 500 km from Sweden to Oslo, Norway to save significant cost.

We booked our stays using Airbnb in advance a week or two. 3/4 stays offered free parking.

Day 1: Helsingborg, Sweden to Oslo, Norway

Our journey began in Helsingborg, Sweden, where we embarked on an exciting road trip to Norway. We stopped for small breaks and lunch at rest stops on the way. Rain was playing hide and seek during some part of our journey.

After a day of driving, we reached Oslo and checked into a cozy Airbnb located in Gamle Oslo. Finding a spot to park the vehicle was bit challenging, we took a small drive around the place an found a free parking starting from 8 PM to morning 9AM. so we had our morning time set when to take out our vehicle for next day journey. This was the only place we had to struggle for parking and other stays had free parking right next to our building.

Distance covered: around 510 km.

Day 2: Oslo to Flåm

Leaving Oslo behind, we made our way to Flåm. Along the way, we were mesmerized by three stunning waterfalls. We ended the day at an Airbnb near Myrkdalen(53 km from Flåm).

Total 2483 Km round trip

Our trip ended with a total of 2500 km traveled across Sweden and Norway.

Let's look at the cost of our road trip to Norway for 7 days. Major costs are car rental and fuel, Airbnb stays, and the rides we took at Flam.

Expenses chart

7-days Norway road trip expenses

We had bought groceries liberally and had 20% of the things were left out. All in all, it takes around 1,40,000 INR for one family.

We consciously chose Flam and Geiranger as per our situation with kids instead of a common route - Flam, Trolltunga, and Bergen. Based on individuals interests, you could choose to treck Trolltunga or other places on the west side of Norway. We also avoided Atlantic Road which is slightly on the northern side from Geiranger which would have added one more day for us.
